No on Prop 46 Campaign's Official Statement November 5, 2014 General , No on Prop 46, Proposition 46 0 For immediate release: November 4, 2014 Contact: Jason Kinney, (916) 806-2719 & Molly Weedn, (415) 209-4217 “NO ON PROP 46” CAMPAIGN’S OFFICIAL STATEMENT ON TONIGHT’S ELECTION RESULTS Sacramento -- Tonight, the No on 46 campaign released the following statement from Dustin Corcoran, CEO of the California Medical Association and Chair of the No on 46 campaign: “Tonight, California voters spoke loudly and definitively: In this health care environment, undermining California’s long-standing malpractice cap is a political poison pill and a policy ‘third rail.’ Californians rejected Proposition 46 because increasing payouts in medical lawsuits would have increased health care costs and reduced access to needed medical care. The voters declared a political ‘no-fly zone’ around making it easier and more profitable for trial lawyers to file more lawsuits. Voters wisely saw through efforts to camouflage Proposition 46’s central provision with poll-tested political ‘sweeteners.’ Attempts to increase the cap on non-economic damages in medical lawsuits have been rejected in California again and again: ten times in court, five times in the Legislature and now overwhelmingly by voters. The secret weapon of this effort was the size and diversity of our coalition – one of the largest coalitions ever assembled to oppose a ballot measure. Labor, business, local government, health providers, community clinics, Planned Parenthood, ACLU, NAACP, taxpayers, teachers, firefighters – the list goes on and on. The breadth of our coalition underscores just how important an affordable, accessible health system is to every Californian.
