Fresno ER physician announces run for State Assembly May 26, 2015 General Physician Leadership, State Assembly, California Assembly 0 On May 11, Joaquin Arambula, M.D., an emergency room physician at Adventist Medical Center in Selma, located in rural Fresno County, announced he is running for the California State Assembly. “I am running for Assembly to make our community a healthier place to live, work and raise a family,” Dr. Arambula said. “I will go to Sacramento to fight for access to quality health care, public education and our fair share of water.” Both the current Assembly representative from District 31, Henry T. Perea, who is not eligible to run because of term limits, and a former representative, Sarah Reyes, have endorsed his candidacy. Dr. Arambula recently spoke to the California Medical Association’s (CMA) 41st Annual Legislative Advocacy Day in April, telling the crowd of more than 300 physicians and medical students, who had come to the Capitol to lobby their legislators, that he had finally gotten the money to build a new hospital in his area, “but I can’t staff it. One of the reasons I am running for office is that I want to bring a medical school to my valley, so I can staff the hospital.” He told the crowd he wanted to be a “champion for CMA” and was seeking like-minded allies who could care as much about the Central Valley as he does. The 31st Assembly District incorporates most of Fresno County, including the cities of Coalinga, Firebaugh, Fowler, Huron, Kerman, Kingsburg, Mendota, Orange Cover, Parlier, Reedley, Sanger, Selma and part of Fresno.
