California Medical Association applauds voter approval of Proposition 52 November 14, 2016 Medi-Cal Ballot Measures, Election, Medi-Cal, Political Advocacy 0 The California Medical Association (CMA) today applauded voter approval of Proposition 52, the California Medi-Cal Hospital Reimbursement Initiative. Voters passed the measure, which will maximize the amount of federal funds available to California to provide health care services to children, seniors and working families through Medi-Cal. “One in three Californians rely on Medi-Cal care so it’s critical that we invest in health care services needed by our most vulnerable populations,” said CMA Immediate Past President Steven E. Larson, M.D., MPH. “Prop. 52 will help provide essentials like check-ups, immunizations, prescriptions, dental and vision care. Doctors understand that healthy patients lead to healthy communities, and we’re proud to have supported a safety net that serves over 13 million low-income Californians.” The Legislative Analyst’s Office (LAO) estimates that Prop. 52 will save the state over $1.5 billion in costs for children’s health coverage by FY 2019–20 and increase support to state and local public hospitals by nearly $350 million. Prop. 52 also adds language to the California Constitution requiring voter approval of changes to the hospital fee program to prevent diversion of the funds. # # # The California Medical Association represents the state's physicians with more than 43,000 members in all modes of practice and specialties.
